About the Conference

Works by women and works dealing with gender are focal in numerous studies in diverse disciplines that invoke feminist, queer, and other theories to promote art research in Israel as a dynamic, subversive, and continually innovative field. These studies set up cross-disciplinary encounters where diverse points of view intersect with issues of gender identity that expands such categories as ethnicity, class, religion, nationality, age, body, and sexuality, among others.
Writing and research about gender are significant meaningful tools that further our
understanding of society and culture and help us identify, reflect on, and conceptualize the social arrangements that populate them.

About the Call

The fourth interdisciplinary conference is being organized by the Association of Women’s Art and Gender Research in Israel (WGA), in conjunction with the Department of Art History at Tel Aviv University and within the framework of cooperation between the Friends of the Washington National Museum of Women Arts in Israel (NMWA Israel) and the WGA. Part of the conference program will be devoted to a “Women to Watch (WTW)” museum project, in which members of the worldwide branches of NMWA are invited to submit lecture proposals.
The proposed topics in this part of the conference, to be held in English, will deal with the core themes of the WTW project: women’s networks; ways of bringing down the barriers confining the visibility of women’s creation and curatorial work; diverse gender representation; and exposure and visibility in the international intercultural sphere, in particular, the critique of globalism’s pluralistic and multi-identitarian promise.

About the Papers

The papers should deal with women and gender in the arts in Israel. However, we will also be pleased to consider additional relevant topics at the conference and, specifically, at the WTW session.

 

Monographs:

•  new studies about women artists in Israel, including forgotten ones, in diverse fields (painting, sculpture, photography, stage direction, design, architecture, playwriting, script writing, music composition, etc.)

•  new studies about creative artists who challenge the limits
  of gender and sexual identity.

•  a format for scholar–artist dialogues on one of the themes of the

 

conference. Concepts, categories, and theories:

•  issues of women artists’ historical representation and non-representation.

•  narratives and canon in Israel in the context of gender issues.

•  issues of feminism and retreat from feminism, art and post-feminism.

•  discussion of “women’s art,” “feminine art,” and “feminine”
  techniques and materials.

•  exclusion or inclusion of women in the arts and the public discourse in Israel.

•  the role of institutional curators or directors in promoting women artists.

•  the state of gender research in the arts in Israel; power relations and theories about the field and its agents.

•  body images (including the male body) and representations of sexual
  and gender identities.

•  issues in intersections of gender, migration, identity, ethnicity, nationality, religion, age, and class.

•  gender-based creative endeavor as an agent of social change;

•  feminist-activist creative endeavor;

•  exposure, visibility, and representation of women in the global art discourse;

•  creation of alternative action networks for women artists in the global sphere.

 

You are invited to submit a proposal of up to 300 words and an additional one-page CV (in the same file) to the two conference organizers: Dr. Ruth Markus and Dr. Mor Presiado by February 1, 2023. Each lecture shall be 20 minutes long.

"נשים ומגדר באמנויות בישראל"

על הכנס

יצירות של נשים ויצירות העוסקות במגדר נמצאות במוקד מחקרים רבים בתחומי דעת שונים, שבהם יש שימוש בתיאוריות פמיניסטיות, קוויריות ואחרות, המאפשרות לקדם את חקר האמנויות בישראל כשדה דינמי, חתרני ומתחדש תדיר. מחקרים אלה יוצרים מפגשים חוצי דיסציפלינות, אשר מציגים נקודות מבט מגוונות המצליבות סוגיות של זהות מגדרית עם קטגוריות זהות נוספות כמו אתניות, מעמד, דת, לאום, גיל, גוף, מיניות ועוד. הכתיבה והמחקר אודות מגדר משמשים כלי חשוב ומשמעותי להבנת חברה ותרבות, ובאיתור, שיקוף והמשגה של ההסדרים החברתיים המתקיימים בה. 

במסגרת הכנס הרב-תחומי הרביעי שמארגנת העמותה לחקר אמנות נשים ומגדר בישראל, ביחד עם החוג לתולדות האמנות באוניברסיטת תל אביב, וכחלק משיתוף הפעולה בין "Israel Women to Watch "  לבין העמותה,  יוקדש חלק מתוכנית הכנס לפרויקט WTW אשר פונה בקריאה לסניפים השונים של WTW ברחבי העולם להציע הצעות להרצאות.  הנושאים המוצעים בחלק זה של הכנס, שייערך באנגלית, יעסקו בנושאי הליבה של הפרויקט WTW: רשתות של נשים; דרכים להסרת חסמים בחשיפת האמנות שנאצרת או /ונוצרת על ידי הנשים ;ייצוג מגדרי מגוון; חשיפה ונראות במרחב האמנותי הבין תרבותי-בין לאומי מתוך ההבנה שמה שנתפס כעולם גלובלי אינו בהכרח פלורליסטי ורב זהותי.

 

אנו קוראות לשליחת הצעות להרצאות שעיסוקן נשים ומגדר באמנויות בישראל  אך נשמח לשקול גם נושאים רלוונטיים נוספים שלא צוינו כאן ובמושב WTW בפרט.

מונוגרפיות: 

• מחקרים חדשים על נשים יוצרות בישראל, כולל יוצרות נשכחות, בתחומים השונים (ציירות, פסלות, צלמות, במאיות, מעצבות, אדריכליות, מחזאיות, תסריטאיות, מלחינות וכדומה) 

• מחקרים חדשים על יוצרים/יוצרות המאתגרים גבולות של מגדר וזהות מינית

• פורמט של דיאלוגים בין חוקר/ת לבין אמנית באחד מנושאי הכנס  

מושגים, קטגוריות ותיאוריות:  

• סוגיות של ייצוג והעדר ייצוג היסטורי של נשים יוצרות 

• נרטיבים וקאנון בישראל בהקשר לסוגיות של מגדר

• סוגיות של פמיניזם והתנערות מפמיניזם, אמנות ופוסט-פמיניזם

• דיון במושגים 'יצירת נשים', 'יצירה נשית', טכניקות וחומרים 'נשיים'

• הדרתן או הכלתן של נשים בשדה האמנויות ובשיח הציבורי בישראל 

• תפקידם של אוצרים/אוצרות או מנהלים/מנהלות של מוסדות בקידומן של יוצרות

• מצב המחקר על מגדר באמנויות בישראל; יחסי כוח ותיאוריות אודות השדה וסוכניו

• דימויים של גוף (כולל הגוף הגברי) וייצוגים של זהויות מיניות ומגדריות  

• סוגיות הנוגעות בהצטלבויות של מגדר, הגירה, זהות, אתניות, לאום, דת, גיל ומעמד

• יצירה מבוססת מגדר כסוכנת שינוי חברתי 

• יצירה אקטיביסטית-פמיניסטית

• אמנות, מגדר ומרחב ציבורי בישראל

• חשיפה, נראות וייצוג של נשים בשיח האמנותי  הגלובלי

• יצירת רשתות פעולה אלטרנטיביות עבור נשים אמניות במרחב הגלובלי 

 

-הנכן/ם מוזמנות/נים להגיש הצעה בהיקף של עד 300 מילים, ועוד עמוד של קורות חיים (באותו קובץ) לשתי מארגנות הכנס: ד"ר רות מרקוס וד"ר מור פרסיאדו, עד לתאריך 1.2.23. משך כל הרצאה 20 דקות.
